The ride departs ‘audax’ style from Burlington along the lakefront bike path to catch the chartered Local Motion Bike Ferry on the Colchester – South Hero causeway. We’ll ride together at a moderate pace to the ferry along the Burlington bike path, enjoying sunrise views of the lake, the northern Green Mountains, and the Adirondacks. We will float across ‘the cut’ as a group. Leaving the ferry riders are free to ride their own pace for the balance of their route.

Quiet flat to rolling roads (dirt and paved) await as we proceed north through the Champlain Islands. Don’t miss Hero’s Welcome with good coffee, cinnamon buns and other homemade baked goodies. Rounding the top of the Vermont side of the lake at Rouse’s Point we’ll turn the wheels south and enjoy lake and mountain views on the New York side. The ride follows quiet lakeside roads to Plattsburgh and on to Port Kent and through the changing terrain passing over Ausable Chasm. 200k riders will cross the lake on the Essex ferry and wind back to the start on the quiet roads of Charlotte and Shelburne.

300k riders will push further to the south along the lake through Wadhams, Westport, and Port Henry towards the Crown Point Bridge temporary ferry. Crossing the lake to the rolling farm country of Addison County brings us back to Vermont on the home stretch. Riders head towards Vergennes and northeast crossing two covered bridges on our way to Hinesburg. Our final push northward brings us back into Burlington for nearly a double century of scenic Champlain Valley cycling.

Note – riders should carry extra cash for control stops and ferry service. The Local Motion Ferry is included with the entry fee. All controls are unstaffed, at local businesses. Receipts and / or signed cards by cafe / store clerks will be the operating procedure for control stops.
