Sunrise, Camel’s Hump Sumit
I’ve been spending a lot of time on two feet this fall. The single speeding and riding has been great – but as my health has improved I’ve really enjoyed getting around in the mountains on foot. I’ve been enamored with Camel’s Hump since moving to Burlington, where I can see it (and Mansfield) just about every day. After a few attempts earlier this summer I finally achieved a full moon and sunrise hike, and I brought along the camera for a time lapse.
Alarm was set for 3:30 am, but I awoke at 3. In the car by 4, at the trail head by 4:45.
The new headlamp, a Petzl NAO with Reactive lighting was excellent. I was skeptical and had buyers remorse – but I am sold – a great light!
Change in layers at the clearing by 6, summit at 6:20, just as the full moon was setting (and hiding in some clouds).
Setup camera, made coffee, and watched the sun rise.
The change in light was incredible.
The morning light on the summit and in the trees just below the alpine zone was amazing.
As I started to descend I watched the shadow creep across the Champlain Valley as I started down.
This was an incredible start to my week.
Covered Bridges of Chittenden County
I did a modified version of a local covered bridge loop here near Burlington, opting to park near the bridges and eliminate most of the busy pavement back and forth from home. ~26 miles, lots of dirt, and the longest ride I’ve done on any bike since… last fall?

I ventured underneath to get a peak at the structure:

I saw quite a few folks fly fishing:

Winter Overnight
No snow, but 37dF and raining when I left the car. Post holiday overnight to Silver Lake in GMNF. Walk in, in the rain. Setup camp, eat dinner, sleep. Walk out. I was at my desk working by 9:30am.
A bit cold, I pitched the BD Mega in a breezy spot. Wind howled overnight, so I blockaded myself in with my pack and camp chair. Had a fitful sleep, but it was wonderful to be outside under a nearly full moon, in the woods, completely alone.

Cotton Brook
Cotton Brook for Pie
A ride in Cotton Brook for homemade apple pie. The plan was to ride in from the Stowe side and sit out the rain at a lean to in Little River State Park. With a late start and decent weather as the afternoon wore on we just sat trail-side and enjoyed home made pie and fresh coffee instead of riding downhill for 1.6 miles only to have to climb back up…
~20 miles
~2600′ of climbing, ~1600′ in the first 9.7 miles
Rain, chilly, home made pie
